Spring 2008 - Mirabella PortlandUrban Senior Living— THE NEW FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Claiming that Mirabella Portland’s urban CCRC lifestyle is “a fountain of youth” may seem to you like we are indulging in a bit of exaggeration—but when you learn about all the evidence that supports our assertion, you may be surprised!

In fact, multiple studies have concluded that people who choose to live in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) live an average of 3.5 years longer than seniors who do not, and they enjoy higher levels of independence than those who stay in a single family home. One particular study, conducted by Dr. Margaret A. Wylde’s ProMatura Group, found that seniors who live in CCRCs are more satisfied with daily lives and are more likely to be happy than their contemporaries who remain in their own homes. It also found that the social and recreational programs offered at CCRCs provided seniors with many opportunities to meet new friends.

“CCRC residents tend to be very social and very positive in attitude,” says Marketing Director Adam Payn. “They’ve planned well for their future, they’re looking forward to their next chapters of life, and they find that the CCRC urban-living concept dovetails with what they want out of life.”

As Adam explains, “Living in a vibrant ‘urban neighborhood,’ allows residents to stay easily connected to the access and energy of the city. At Mirabella Portland, the Streetcar is just steps away, making it simple and easy for residents to access anything in the entire city: theatre, concerts, and other cultural events; shopping in the NW 23 Street district; and meeting friends at a favorite restaurant anywhere in town.”

“The South Waterfront district is also a great walking neighborhood, and study after study shows that people who live in walk-able neighborhoods stay healthier and have an easier time controlling their weight,” says Adam. “The neighborhood also offers residents a wealth of easily accessed services and amenities such as shops, boutiques, grocery stores, open park spaces, bookstores, coffee shops and restaurants, and health care facilities, all of which enhance and enrich life.”

Another thing that’s very appealing about Mirabella’s local urban neighborhood is that residents don’t have to use their cars for everything. Less time spent commuting to appointments or events means more free time for residents to spend doing as they please: relaxing, spending time with family and friends, and pursuing their favorite pastimes.

“All of these things add up,” says Adam. “These various elements of urban CCRC living work together in helping residents add not just years to their lives, but also life to their years.”
